GALAS – a retail and office centre on Kulparkivska Street in Lviv, built as part of the Safe Town residential quarter. Six floors of retail and office space totalling 13,250 m², with multi-level covered parking.
The governing structural decision is an 8-metre cantilever, which opened up public space at ground level without additional columns. The difficulty was holding multi-level parking, retail floors and office floors inside one load-bearing system: the loads are distributed unevenly, and the structural scheme had to be worked through in detail because of it.
The centre was not designed on its own but as part of the quarter: it shares a site with the Safe Town residential sections and forms their public frontage – shops, services and offices within walking distance of the flats.
